I have a couple of social-media stories that I’m tracking. To avoid producing a low quality, click-through diary, I’m going to compile a few of them into a ‘roundup’ of the week:
1. Brazil vs X: X has decided to comply with the Brazilian court order to block certain accounts, and will be allowed to continue operating in Brazil. However, they bypassed the Brazilian court gag-order by providing the Brazilian court order to Republican allies in US Congress (under subpoena), who then published the order. In other news, Musk has announced that users will need to register and pay before they can post on X.
2. Taylor Swift is on Threads, but the account is not federated with Mastodon yet.
3. The University of Innsbruck (Austria) has established a Mastodon instance for its employees.
3. Trump media stock has a volatile week, finishes up a bit (from $32 to $36 per share).
4. Posts are being scraped from Discord, and information sold on harassment-focused websites.
5. Post News is shutting down. This platform arose during the Twitter takeover of 2022 as journalists sought a more trustworthy (and profitable) platform for their writings.
6. The latest episode of the “Social Media and Politics” podcast is on “Far Right Women Influences on YouTube and Instagram, with Dr. Evaine Leidig”
