On Tuesday, Twitter blew up when Nicki Minaj took on industry misogynoir (anti-black misogyny, where race and gender together are factors in the hatred of black women) while venting her frustrations about receiving only two MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) nominations for “Anaconda,” and fellow nominee Taylor Swift mistakenly assumed she was being targeted by Minaj.
Swift’s indignant response called out Minaj for not being more supportive of other female artists, stating: “It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”
The VMAs hardly matter. But the frustrations Minaj voiced—and Swift’s interruption—absolutely do.
