For almost five decades, the conservative movement and so-called “pro-life” groups wanted the 1973 Roe vs Wade US Supreme Court decision reversed. With the ascension of three new justices appointed by Donald Trump — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett — the court finally had a reliable conservative majority. In 2022, their dream was realized, but with the uneasy recognition that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Has the issue of severely restricting abortion rights become an electoral nightmare for the GOP? I live in NW Washington, DC and this issue has certainly contributed to making the State of Virginia a blue-ish state, trending even bluer after the 2022 and 2023 Elections. The suburbs in Northern Virginia — reliably Republican in the 1980s and 1990s — have undergone a remarkable political transformation. I suspect that is true for many other states around the country.
Being stridently anti-choice is seen by some as a "political suicide mission for both the GOP and the pro-life cause." For others, it could well cost the Republican Party control of the US House of Representatives in 2024 and result in fewer seats in the United States Senate.
“Democrats’ rush to get abortion-related initiatives on the ballot in key states could throw a wrench in Republicans’ effort to keep the House in 2024,”Axiosreports.
“As many as eight states could have an abortion-related referendum on the ballot next November. Among those states are nearly two dozen House districts rated as some degree of competitive byCook Political Report.”
“Maryland and New York — which alone could have half a dozen swing districts, pending a redistricting lawsuit — are both set to have referenda on the ballot.”
Taylor Swift urged her American followers to vote in the 2023 elections on her Instagram Stories Tuesday—but many online have slammed the message as "performative."
On Tuesday, voters in several states went to the polls to decide key races and issues.
The "Blank Space" singer wrote: "Voters gonna vote! It's Election Day! If you are registered to vote in Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas or Virginia, it's time to use your voice."
While Republicans whine about the 2023 election that the media kept trying to put in the bag for them, let's remember something important: The ONLY polls that matter are those we vote at during elections…https://t.co/GwoQoM5PgXpic.twitter.com/GTRNRHK4KN
